As part of World Sight Day, the Peñoles Community Center in Velardeña, Durango, has become a vital health space for the community, offering free ophthalmological consultations with the aim of detecting and treating various eye conditions in a timely manner. This initiative is in line with Peñoles ' social commitment and its continuous effort to improve the quality of life in the areas where it operates.

Since 2013, Peñoles has maintained a collaboration agreement with the UNAM Foundation, through which it takes specialist doctors to the communities near its mining units, providing free ophthalmological medical care to those who do not have access to health services.

More than a decade of commitment to eye health

To date, this alliance has provided 10,327 ophthalmological consultations and donated 10,460 pairs of eyeglasses in various communities in Guerrero, Chihuahua, Mexico State, Sonora, Durango and Zacatecas. This impact has allowed thousands of people, who otherwise would not have been able to receive medical attention, to improve their vision and quality of life.

In Coahuila, the synergy between Peñoles and various institutions in La Laguna has led to a series of awareness campaigns and free eye exams, as well as workshops and eye health education programs aimed at raising awareness of the importance of eye care.

An effort aligned with World Sight Day

World Sight Day is celebrated every year on the second Thursday of October, an initiative that began in 2000 under the leadership of the World Health Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. This day seeks to highlight the importance of visual health and promote preventive measures to avoid blindness and other visual conditions.

Peñoles, together with its allies, joins this celebration reaffirming its commitment to the eye health of communities, recognizing that proper vision is essential not only for individual well-being, but also for social and economic development.

Free access to specialized ophthalmologic care

The consultation program at Velardeña continues to be an example of Peñoles' social responsibility model, a company that understands that the well-being of communities goes beyond its mining operations. Free ophthalmology care represents an invaluable opportunity for those who do not have the financial resources to access specialized medical services.

With a focus on prevention and early diagnosis, Peñoles continues to create long-term positive impact, reducing the risk of serious visual disease and improving the quality of life for thousands of people in Mexico.

This work is not only a sign of Peñoles' commitment to the community, but also a reminder of the importance of collaboration between companies, foundations and international organizations in the promotion of public health.
